Jurassic Park: The Lost World movie vs book [22 May 2008|07:33pm]

Out of all the film adaptions i've seen, this is the one that bears least resemblance to the book, only the t-rex vs the trailer scene is really taken from the book.
I though the book was good, but unlike most diehard fans, I believe that most of the changes made for a better film. Making Malcolm more of a definite lead rile was a good move. Having the hunters capture live dinosaurs rather than just eggs made it a lot more dramatic. Having the hunter and gatherer camps team up to find safety made for a lot more interesting drama between the two groups, the book only had sarah meeting them briefly. And while some found the T-rex in the city a bit silly, I thought it made a much more spectacular end than just another raptors breaking into buildings that the book ends with.

What do you think?

Favorite book: Right now... Gone with the Wind
Favorite author: Terry Pratchett
Favorite movie: there's so many, but right now Gone with the Wind
Favorite director: couldn't say
Favorite adaptation: um, Gone with the Wind? I thought Jurassic Park and The Great Gatsby were pretty good too...
Worst adaptation: Jaws but a reversal I hated the book and loved the movie... in fact the only thing they seemed to have in common was the shark and even that was debatable what with the mob runn'in around the place...

Favorite book: Changes minute to minute, really. Let's say Timberline by Gene Fowler for the favorite one I've read in the last month.
Favorite author: Ray Bradbury, Margaret Atwood, Alexandre Kuprin, Anne Fadiman, Anna Quindlen, etc. My favorite editor, though, is Richard Chizmar.
Favorite movie: Right now, The Commitments. I haven't read the book, but I probably should. I'm also partial to The Nightmare Before Christmas in French.
Favorite director: Tim Burton.
Favorite adaptation: The Shining, TV Movie
Worst adaptation: The Shining with Jack Nicholson and a very big axe. I like to list both versions as best and worst, because The Shining represents how movies can corrupt the author's vision into something very different. I don't see The Shining as a slasher book at all, but Kubrick saw it differently, and Kubrick was not exactly known for allowing different opinions.
